Did you know that oceans cover over 70 percent of the globe and contain 97% of Earth’s water? The oceans also provide us with at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen so why are the oceans getting destroyed? Let’s talk about it…
Every year on June the 8th, we celebrate World Ocean Day internationally to bring attention to the crisis that is currently causing mass destruction in the ocean. With ocean temperatures rising and ocean biodiversity decreasing, this is a huge cause for concern. The ocean is home to thousands of wonderful species and with these issues becoming more and more prominent, there is a huge risk that we can lose tons of endangered marine organisms and destroy the ecosystem forever.
What is even worse is that ocean acidification’s effects can be irreversible. With up to 23 million metric tons of plastic ending up in our lakes, rivers and eventually our oceans each year, it is known that by 2025 that number could double.
However, so many organisations, brands and people know this is a cause for concern and have been actively bringing the issues to light. Two brands, in particular, that want to make a huge change is Alex Eagle Sporting Club and Ocean Bottle.
I attended their event earlier this morning, held at the Strand Health Club and they had partnered up with Ocean Bottle to host a wonderful morning, bringing to light the effects of pollution within the ocean and what we can do about it.
“By 2050, the plastic in our ocean will outweigh the fish. To avert this crisis, we don’t need a handful of people doing

sustainability perfectly; we need millions doing it imperfectly”
Ocean Bottle has taken over Alex Eagle Sporting Club to present to everyone their sustainable bottle that can help the oceans overcome this crisis. The brand prides itself in creating the ‘world’s most needed reusable water bottle’ that does not pollute the ocean but helps clean up as every bottle purchased funds the collection of 1000 plastic bottles.
Of course, I had to attend the event to find out more about World Ocean Day and I was very surprised to hear that for each attendee, Ocean Bottle funds 10 plastic bottle removals on your behalf!
The event started off with a calming sound bath session. Fully immersed in a room accompanied by the healing sounds of the ocean, the session was the perfect way to relax the muscles and get rid of any thoughts floating around in your conscious. The ocean sounds were amazing and definitely got me in the right perspective for the rest of the event.
Following on from the sound bath, they then held a restorative yoga session for us to indelve in. The yoga class focused on breath awareness and energy alignment to balance and uplift the body and mind.
The guests also had the chance to have a revitalizing facial or massage using algae extract products which is the perfect accompaniment to make everyone feel closer to earth. They also provided a lovely breakfast for everyone to indulge in which was a special touch as well as a goodie bag with one Ocean Bottle, a REN day cream and a lovely tote bag.
The event as a whole was an amazing experience. Targetting a huge problem that is marine pollution and the rising sea levels, AESC and Ocean Bottle partnering up are a force not to be reckoned with.
“We’re really proud to be working with Ocean Bottle supporting the crucial work they continue to do on plastic waste. We hope the takeover at 180 Health Club will inspire us to come together to combat this crisis and remind us of the fragility of our oceans.”

Now I bet you’re wondering what you can do to help fix the world’s ocean pollution problem? Here’s how you can help:
1. Reduce Waste
From plastic bottles to squeezy tubes, make sure to check what you can recycle! The more rubbish you put in general waste, the more rubbish that ends up in landfills and our oceans. If you can switch to eco-friendly alternatives! Loads of shops and stores have formed refilling schemes where you can ditch the plastic bottle and lids and opt for a metal bottle to reuse and refill. Not only does it work out cheaper for you overall but you are reducing plastics that end up in the ocean! It’s a win-win!
2. Cut back on Chemical Pollutants!
Products like laundry detergents and cleaning sprays are really toxic to the environment and if you don’t dispose of them correctly, they can cause an adverse effect on the ocean. Instead of going for hazardous chemicals, pick up natural alternatives to your detergents and personal care products. The earth will thank you later!
3. Take part in Beach clean-ups
It doesn’t have to be a huge organised event. Maybe even next time you visit your beach, grab a plastic bag and a litter picker and collect rubbish from the seafronts. It may seem like it’s a small step but it makes a huge difference!
Even though there is only one designated World Ocean Day, remember to keep in mind the knock-on effects your actions may have on the environment. Let’s protect and preserve the ecosystems and make the ocean and earth a better place.
