Karine Laudort The weekend has come back around again and since we are still in Lockdown, the only option you have is to stay in and watch movies. If you are anything like us, you will have pretty much exhausted Netflix over the past couple of weeks. That is why we are making our top suggestions for the weekend, so all you need is a Netflix subscription and you are ready to relax.
Enola Holmes (2020)
Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown plays Enola Holmes, Sherlock Holmes’ charming and witty younger sister. She travels across London in an attempt to find her Mother, outwitting her famous brother and unravelling a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord. This is a lighthearted watch for the weekend and we definitely recommend it.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse (2018)
A slight twist on the classic, Miles Morales gets bitten by a radioactive spider. He becomes the Spider-Man of his Universe and must join with five spider-powered individuals from other dimensions to stop a threat for all. This is a great family watch and the animations will have you in awe.
Zodiac (2007)
This is one that you have to really watch, it will get you thinking. It is about the Zodiac killer who first appeared in San Francisco in the late sixties, he would send attention-seeking letters addressed directly to the editor of the San Francisco Chronicle which included strange coded pictograms. The Newspaper’s cartoonist becomes an amateur detective obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac Killer. It is quite a long film but it is worth the watch.
The Holiday (2006)
If you are wanting to watch a Christmas film, but think it is too early to watch the really festive ones, this one is perfect. It is the story of two women who are having men troubles, who swap homes for Christmas in each other’s countries. It is a classic Christmas romance and it is such a feel-good film.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
This movie shows the story of 7 people on trial after peaceful protests turn into a violent clash with police, during the 1968 Democratic national convention. It is quite a lengthy film, but this portrays how long the trial was. The most shocking part is the treatment of the eighth man on trial, Black Panther Bobby Seale. He is subjected to racism and humiliation in the court, but eventually, Seale’s case is declared a mistrial.
La La Land (2016)
Set in modern-day Los Angeles, the story shows an actress and a pianist fall in love whilst trying to figure out their future and careers. As their success builds, they are faced with decisions that interfere with their love affair. This is another feel-good romance and includes songs from the original musical.
13th (2016)
If you prefer a documentary rather than a movie, 13th is worth a watch. It is an in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how this reveals the history of the nations of racial inequality. It is a thought-provoking documentary, as scholars, activists, and politicians analyse the criminalisation of African Americans.
Inception (2010)
A skilled thief steals valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. The team of specialists have to plant an idea, instead of stealing one. It could be the perfect crime if they succeed, but no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. It will have you on the edge of your seat.
Roma (2018)
The story shows a year in the life of a middle-class family’s maid in Mexico City in the early 1970s. When the father of the family suddenly runs away with his mistress and the maid finds out that she’s pregnant, the mother decides to take the kids on vacation and invites the maid for a getaway to clear her mind and bond with the family. The film has a few emotional scenes, so if you are easily moved it will have you crying.
Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020)
If you do decide to start the festivities early this year, Netflix has some great Christmas films on offer. This new Netflix Original shows the story of an eccentric toymaker who finds new hope in his granddaughter decades after his once trusted apprentice betrayed him. They both discover a magical invention that has the power to change their lives forever.
This weekend you will not have to open Netflix and scroll for hours through the endless options they have to offer, sometimes it can be daunting not knowing where to look and it is easy to get frustrated when you can not find the perfect film. So grab your blankets and snacks, and sit back and relax whilst you watch all these wonderful movies.
